Formed in 2003, Kulture Break is a Not-for-profit charitable creative arts organisation with a community focus. Kulture Break all began with founder Francis Owusu wanting to provide an outlet for young people to use their creative abilities to discover who they really are. He believed that you didn't need to become somebody you are somebody! So he started out teaching break-dance and Hip-hop to students in a local high school where the name "Kulture Break" was born. The name embraces the meaning of breaking new territory, overcoming negative cultural barriers, stereotypes and empowering people. Kulture Break's vision is to "influence a culture and empower a generation". Offering more than just dance; it's has become a movement with a positive message of hope and transformation for youth.
The Kulture Break program offers dance classes ranging from Hip hop, Breakdance, Contemporary-Jazz to Swing and conducts tailored workshops, seminars, performances for schools, government agencies and community organisations across Australia and Internationally.
Since 2006, Kulture Break has worked with over 80,000 youth in schools, jails and communities all over Australia and internationally. It hosts one of the largest Break Dance and Hip Hop showcase events in Australia held annually, the Break-hip-hop Expo attracts over 2000 people and over 400 performers from around the country and overseas.
In 2009, Kulture Break became Canberra first dance organisation to feature a finalist in the popular TV series "So You Think You Can Dance" with Timomatic making the Top 10. For four years Timomatic was the Artistic Director of Kulture Break and was instrumental in giving Kulture Break the profile it has today.
The attitude that every person is special and has something to offer is ingrained in the culture of our organisation. Our mix of dance, music and passion makes Kulture Break a major force in the marketplace.
