Background

Description

Man-Up is a relatively new project under Kulture Break and was launched this year on March18th officially by Chief Minister Jon Stanhope as way of providing more opportunities for males to be involved in dance training, performances and leadership development. Traditionally Kulture Break has attracted a high number of boys involved in its programs. Since 2002, well over 1000 boys have participated in their programs and some have gone onto professional pursuits most recently and notably Timomatic who was a top 10 Finalist in the 2009 series of So You Think You Can Dance. Timomatic joined Kulture Break in 2003, now living in Sydney, Timomatic is now still involved in their training programs targeted at developing males in the arts. The Success of Man-Up so far is written on the lives of those young men who have been involved in the program. One particular young man quoted "Kulture Break has brought some excitement to my life"- Jason 16yrs. The Man-Up program goes beyond just dance as well as providing excellent physical health benefits it provides individuals a sense of belonging, self worth, increase in confidence and self-esteem. It develops their teamwork and communications skills and provides opportunities for them to engage in "acts of giving" to the community. All the instructors involved in the program as volunteer their time and also act as mentors to the boys. The challenge ahead in maintaining this success includes securing funding streams to further develop our program to reach more youth including a program for females.

The Man-Up Framework

As part of Man-Up each dancer will be given the opportunity to train, perform and serve in our community.
The Man-Up Framework consists in developing three core elements

Training: Man-Up is committed to the development of skill and character of each individual. Dance Training and workshops promote physical activity, and seminars and camps are geared to provide tools and keys to instill resilience, teamwork, and integrity that empower the personal growth of each member.

Performance: Man-Up is committed to producing the best performances that inspire all members and audiences to enjoy dance and music as a positive outlet. Performances aim to build self confidence, high self-esteem, social inclusion and developing friendships through showcasing member's talents. Performances events and regional tours are organised thought the year.

Community: Man-Up is committed to leadership development of positive role models in our local community. Members expand their social awareness in the community and will be provided with opportunities to display their care for the community through service and acts of kindness. These acts of kindness provide hope to young people and their community.
